On September 4, 2014, actress and comedienne Joan Rivers underwent what
was supposed to be a routine endoscopy procedure—but she never woke
up. She passed away at Mount Sinai Hospital. Following her death, investigations
have been made, resulting in some shocking discoveries regarding the behavior—and
negligence—of the medical staff involved in Rivers’ endoscopy.
Attorneys for Rivers’ estate have filed a medical malpractice lawsuit,
claiming that Rivers’ family (namely her daughter Melissa Rivers)
wants to make sure that the negligence and malpractice that ultimately
led to Joan’s death are “never repeated by any outpatient
According to the lawsuit, the doctors who performed the endoscopy at the
Yorkville Endoscopy clinic failed to monitor Joan’s medications
or her weight before sedating her. The lawsuit also alleges that the doctors
performed a laryngoscopy without Rivers’ written consent.
In addition to these negligent acts, it is also alleged that Rivers’
doctors allowed a “selfie” to be taken with Rivers’
while she was sedated.
Ultimately, reports show that Rivers’ oxygen saturation and vital
signs were not properly monitored while she was sedated. As a result,
Rivers suffered brain damage due to lack of oxygen, allegedly as a result
of a second laryngoscopy that the doctors performed – again without
Rivers’ consent – which arguably compromised her airway and
