Causes of Postpartum Hemorrhage
There are many causes of excessive bleeding in the mother after birth. Some causes of postpartum hemorrhage include an inability of the uterus to contract after delivery, tears, placental abruption, placenta previa, placental accrete, blood clot disorders, and tissues from the placenta invading or rupturing the uterine wall. In addition, some cases of postpartum hemorrhage arise from steps taken by medical professionals.
Some steps taken by medical professionals that may cause hemorrhaging include:

- Medications for stopping contractions
- Use of forceps
- Vacuum assisted delivery
- Infections
Certain women are at greater risk for postpartum hemorrhage and should be carefully monitored after the delivery, including women with preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, or obesity.
